Martin "E-type" Eriksson - The History
- Martin
was born in Uppsala, 1965. He learned very early about music and
playing instruments. His father is jazzpianist and several others
of the relatives was in to music in different ways. Martins first
appearance was in the band "Jara Sahara Band". At the
age of 12 he bought his first drums.
- Then he joined the thrash-metal band "Maninnya
Blade". This band was formed 1984 with the members Leif
Eriksson, Nicklas "Nick The Ripper" Johansson, Jan
"Blomman" Blomqvist and Ingemar Lundberg. After the
first single was released, Mikael "Mike Weed"
Wikström, joined the band. They recorded two demos with this
line-up, but in 1985 they decided to move from the northern town
Boden, to Stockholm. However, "Mike" decided to stay
and he was replaced by Jerry Rutström. Jerry was later replaced
by ex "Damien" guitarist Andreas "Rick
Meister" Palm and Ingemar was replaced on the drums by
Martin Eriksson. Then they shortened the name to just
"Maninnya". Leif was asked to leave the band, and
"Nick" took over his task. "Mike", who had
also moved to Stockholm at this time, joined again and Martin
Eriksson left.(According to Martin, he was sacked after the demo
which brought them to a record deal. The reason was that Martin
wanted better chorus in the songs. Other members says that Martin
didn´t got in time to rehearsals and that was the reason).
- In 1987, the band changed their name to "Hexenhaus".
1988, "Nick" quit and moved back to Boden, to start
working in theatre. (Later, "Nick" re-formed
"Maninnya Blade" with Jerry, Jan and new drummer Johan
Henriksson). Singer Thomas Lundin from the band Hatred was tested
but the band choosed Tommie Agrippa from Damien because he and
Rick Meister was friends from earlier. After 1½ year the band
changed their mind and replaced Tommie Agrippa with Thomas
Lundin. At that time Rick had also been replaced.
-The first "Hexenhaus" album (1988) line-up was
featured, "Mike Weed", "Nick",
"Blomman", "Rick Meister" and drummer Ralph
"Raideen" Rydén.
- On the second album (1990), the line-up is totally different.
It contained former "Damien" singer Tommie Agrippa,
Marco A Nicosia, Mårten "Marty" Marteen and former
"Parasite" drummer Johan "Billy St John"
Billerhag.
- On the third album (1991), Conny Welén (ex
"Mezzrow", later "Dry Dead River") replaced
"Marty". Ralph was then in "Keegan". Thomas
Lundin was now in the band as singer. "Mike" was later
formed the band "Memento Mori", where also Marco was
found. He was also part of ex "Candlemass" bass-player
Leif Edlings project "Abstrakt Algebra", and he spent
three years in "King Diamond Band" (no records made).
"Nick" Johansson is today (1998) in the band
"Slowgate". "Hexenhaus" quit 1992 but still
released a 4th album in 1997. Enough about that.
- Martin
Eriksson moved to Bromma in his teens, and he´s still in the
Stockholm area. As a teenager, Martin listened to a lot of metal
and reggae, and that shows in his music today, especially on the
live gigs. Martin went out from senior level at
"Höglandskolan" with a grade of 2.3 (of 5). In the
gymnasium level at "Bromma Gymnasium" it went a lot
better with the grade 4.9 . After that he came in to law studies,
but quit that after 1.5 year and moved to music instead.
- Then he became the rapper called "MC Werewolf". 1988,
his mother died in cancer, a disease which ten years later also
took his producer and very close friend, Dag "Denniz
PoP" Volle, away from this life, at the age of 35. After
many years as rapper and drummer, Martin met "Stakka
Bo" (Johan Renck, now also famous video producer!) , 1991.
The result of that was a new artist name and three singles. The
first one was called "We´ve Got the Atmosphere". Now
Martin started to work at Z-TV. Earlier work had been printer and
carrying dead bodies. In 1993, the first "E-type" solo
single, "I´m Falling", was released. It was not a
great success, and Martin says today, that it was sold in 87
copies or something like that!
- In the autumn 1993, Martin met an old friend from the
childhood, David Hesselman, at "Sturecompagniet" in
Stockholm. Martin was a bit drunk and told his old friend that
he´s got sacked by Z-TV and that no producer liked the songs he
played to them. David said that he would set up a meeting with
"Denniz PoP" and Martin thougt it was no chance of
that. No problem, said David, I work with him! Come tomorrow and
you´ll get 15 minutes of his time. On the next day, Martin went
to see "Denniz" with his demos. They sat down and
talked in 4 HOURS!!! Right at the end "Denniz" listened
to the demos and said, no, this is not so good, but I like you as
a person! Come back with better songs and I will help you. After
that, Martin ran to "Denniz" with 10 new songs every
week. One day he came with "Set The World On Fire" and
"Denniz" said, now it´s time to work!!
- Martin
started to work with "Denniz", "Max Martin"
and "Amadin" (Kristian Lundin and John Amatiello), and
the first single, "Set The World On Fire", was released
in the summer of 1994. This single went high on the charts both
in Sweden and outside the country. It reached nr 1 on the dance
chart and nr 2 on the single chart, in Sweden. The follow-up
single, "This Is The Way", was then released, and was a
new success, nr 1 on the single chart. After that, two more
singles was released ("Do You Always" and "Russian
Lullaby") .
In November 1994, the first album, "Made In Sweden",
came out on the market, and immediately jumped to nr 2 on the
album chart. This album was on the chart for 26 weeks. Totally,
"E-type", sold over 120.000 records in that year. The
great success was followed up with a hat trick on the Swedish
Dance Music Awards, where he got the awards for best singer, best
artist and best newcomer. Alongside him, "Denniz" got
the award best producer for the second time.
- After all this, the rest of the world showed interest in
"E-type". In 1995 he toured around the globe with the
"Bend Over Band". He toured a lot in Asia where he was
(and is) very popular. Six singles was released in France. USA
and UK also showed some interest. "This Is The Way",
climbed to nr 15 on the Billboard Dance Chart and to nr 6 in UK.
1996, a new single, "Free Like A Flying Demon", was
released and sold over 20.000 copies.
- In October 1996, the second album, "The Explorer, was
released with a totally different sound. It was selling gold. The
clean techno sound was changed to more guitars, but it was still
a dance album. Same producers was with him on this album. In
November, the second single, "Calling Your Name",
reached the stores and this single climbed to nr 1 on the dance
chart. A winter tour started 1996, followed-up with a big summer
tour in 1997. The hard touring schedule made Martin tired, but
still he had the power to think about next album, where he wanted
to get back to the euro disco as in "Made In Sweden".
"E-type" went back to the studio with the same
producers. In June 1998, the first single, "Angels
Crying", was released, and after just two weeks this single
sold gold and reached nr 2 on the single chart. But, the
happiness over the single was not so long. August 30th,
"E-type" producer and very close friend, Dag
"Denniz PoP" Volle, died in cancer. The decease of
"Dagge" was very hard for Martin. The inspiration was
not there any more and and the work on the new album was
postponed. All gigs was cancelled. Martin nearly ended his
"E-type" career, but luckily he changed his mind.
- After a while, the work started again, and at the beginning of
November, next single, "Here I Go Again", was released
and sold even better than the first one. It climbed immediately
to nr 1 on the single chart. At the end of the month, next album,
"Last Man Standing" was released. It was a tribute to
"Denniz PoP". After ten days, the album was nr 1 on the
album chart and with a lot of hard PR-work, "E-type"
was the name on everybodys lips again!
- At the end of 1998, Nana Hedin decided to leave Martin and work
with other music. Nana is the female chorus-singer on all hits
and was also touring with "E-type".
- At the beginning of 1999, the next single, "Princess Of
Egypt", was expected. It came out one month late, due to
some trouble on the record company and was not the same success
as the first two. But still, it made it to the top ten on the
single chart. The success continued when "E-type"
during the winter got awards on "Rockbjörnen", Swedish
Grammy and a platinum record. Later in 1999, another single,
"Hold Your Horses" was released.
- The whole spring was a big prepare for the up-coming summer
tour. A new live band was set up for the 1999 tour, partly with
members from "Bend Over Band", but most of them was
new. Take a look at Bandmembers if you want to see who they are. The new
band was called "The Frying Demons". The summer tour
made an unofficial start with two gigs in Riga and St Petersburg.
Martin and the band was not satisfied with the performances and
wanted more rehearsals. Therefor the start of the tour was
postponed til they´ve made that. After that they did two more
unofficial gigs in Lahtis and Kuopio, and finally at May 26th,
the official tour kicked off at Liseberg, Gothenburg. Containing
gigs in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Ukraine, the tour
was a GREAT success! More than 215000 visitors made it to the
"E-type" gigs this summer! And even the Swedish
reviewers thought that it was a great show! In July, four gigs
had to be cancelled when Martin got sick. The tour ended with a
GREAT gig at "Kolsnäsparken" in Sunne on August 28th.
At the evening of August 29th, everyone was on a BIG tour closing
party in and around Stockholm. (Read the story about the tour
closing party at www.etype.dk, written by band-leader Johan
Dereborn)
- At November 24th, the fourth album was released. It contained 2
CDs, one "Greatest Hits" and one "Greatest
Remixes". At the end of 1999 "E-type" and the band
did some TV recordings ("Toppen" at Z-TV,
"Söndagsöppet" at SVT and "Drömträffen"
at TV4).
- Now, we all just hope that Martin decide to do a tour in the
summer of -2000! Next (new) "E-type" album will
probably be released at the end of -2000 or beginning of -2001,
Martin says. The story continues!
-February
7th-2000, Martin played his fav.songs at
"Musikjournalen" on Swedish P3. The programme was an
hour long and he played Bob Marley, Iron Maiden, Michael Jackson,
Mozart (!!), Vangelis and a lot of others. He also said that
he´s working on four songs to a Swedish western movie! As a
presentation for himself he got to pick one of his own songs. His
choice was "I´m not alone", from The Explorer album.
-Martin´s new metal band will release their first single in May,
and it´s called "Boogie Man". After that there will be
a release of an EP with four songs and later, maybe a tour!? This
band will have the line-up: Martin Eriksson on drums and artist
name "Bone Rangel", Martin "Max Martin"
Sandberg (demonproducer/songwriter) on vocals with the name
"Martin White", Per Aldeheim on guitar, Peter Kahm on
bass and Micke Pietile on second guitar, and he´ll be called
"Mike Phillips". What the band is going to be called is
not known at the moment!
-Late in March -2000 it came out in public that Martin was choosed to do the official anthem for Euro 2000 soccer tournament. May 29th the single Campione 2000 was released and the success could start. June 10th Martin and his band closed the openening ceremony of Euro 2000 with their Campione 2000 in front of 1.2 billion TV-viewers! The single are selling GREAT in a lot of countries.
-June 14th, Martins and Max Martins heavy metal-project is post-poned to christmas, because of Max Martins heavy schedule in the studio! Up til now they have done about 20 rehearsals and has 3 songs ready!
-On 13th of nov. E-type was performing on "Svenska fotbollsgalan" at swedish TV with "Campione 2000".
-At the end of 2000, E-type and german techno queen Blümchen released their single "Es Ist Nie Vorbei".
-In november 2001, E-type released the album Euro IV-Ever. The first single Life was a GREAT success!! Second single release was the song Africa.
-In the summer 2002 he went on a new big summer tour (Euro IV-Ever Tour) which was a great success!!!
-During the winter early 2003, E-type went on the next tour called Euro Metal Tour 2003. Here it was a bit heavier versions of the usual E-type songs and with Motõrhead drummer Mikkey Dee on the drums...Great success as usual....
-In 2004 E-type participated in the swedish Melodifestivalen where he won the semifinal. In the final he became no:5. The song was Paradise which was to be the first single from the new album "Loud Pipes Save Lives", released later in march.
-A new big summer tour will take place in 2004, starting in Helsingborg 28th may.
-Loud Pipes Save Lifes Tour 2004 was quite a success even though Gyllene Tider was taking a lot of people from other artists. The setup was a bit different on this tour with a bit more of a disco approach...
-In 2005 E-type is doing a small number of gigs with a smaller band on stage. He will also be a part of Julgalan which he also was in 2004. During the summer we have also seen him in Stadskampen doing a makeover on a cottage.. 27/8-2005 he turned 40 years young.....Congratulations!!
-2007, E-type releases "True believer", which is a new success! And 31/7 He enter the stage at "Allsång på Skansen", wcich is broadcasted on SVT1.
